One of President Trump’s top reelection campaign aides said that marijuana should remain illegal when asked in an interview about Trump’s position on changing federal cannabis laws.

“I think what the president is looking at this from a standpoint of a parent of a young person to make sure that we keep our kids away from drugs,” said Marc Lotter from Trump’s 2020 campaign, Forbes reported. “They need to be kept illegal. That is the federal policy.”

Trump has shown some support for states’ rights to implement their own cannabis laws during his first campaign and his time in the White House.

“We’re going to see what’s going on,” Trump said last year. “It’s a very big subject and right now we are allowing states to make that decision. A lot of states are making that decision, but we’re allowing states to make that decision.”

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
