Americans are split on many issues but appear to be in sync when it comes to opinions on the health risks of marijuana when compared to alcohol, tobacco and sugar.

Significantly more people say that cigarettes, alcoholic drinks and candy bars are more harmful to people’s health than marijuana, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey, NBC News reports.

Only 9% of respondents say that marijuana is the most harmful substance of the four, which is much less than the 41% putting tobacco first, the 24% who put alcohol first and the 21% who ranked sugar first.

State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
