The new ballot initiative campaign seeking to repeal aspects of Arizona’s voter-approved marijuana legalization law has called it quits after just a few months.

Sean Noble, the campaign’s head, told Howard Fisher of Arizona Capitol Times that he’s changed his mind on the issue. “I’ve adjusted my viewpoints,” said Noble.

Noble said he initially launched the campaign to protect kids from marijuana. But after further investigating the topic, he realized his assumption was wrong and that Arizona dispensaries aren’t marketing cannabis products to kids.

Noble’s decision could also be, in part, due to HB 2179, a new state law taking effect in July that establishes stricter advertising rules on the cannabis industry to prevent marijuana products from being promoted to anyone under the age of 21 by prohibiting marijuana packaging from resembling brands that are marketed to kids and from containing images of toys, cartoons, animated characters and the like.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
