Arizona Recreational Marijuana Law

Arizona is on track to outpace Colorado in marijuana sales. Arizona’s total annual marijuana sales are expected to surpass $1 billion by the end of this year.

Marijuana revenue from total sales have nearly doubled since January, around the time that the sale of recreational marijuana to adults 21 and older officially started, AZCentral reported.

Based on monthly sales of $117 million to $123 million over the past three months, the state could surpass $1 billion in total medical and recreational cannabis sales by the end of 2021.

Comparatively, Colorado saw about $684 million in total cannabis sales in 2014, the first year the state legalized the sale of both medical and recreational marijuana.

Arizona has already collected about $75 million in taxes in 2021 from combined medical and recreational cannabis sales (January to May).

State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
