AZ Recreational Cannabis Sales
Arizona’s medical marijuana sales have plummeted while adult-use sales for recreational marijuana remain high, according to the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR).

Medical sales dropped below $45 million in May, their lowest since January 2021, when adults 21 and older were first permitted to buy cannabis at Arizona dispensaries.

Estimates from ADOR put recreational sales at $76.5 million, the fifth time recreational marijuana sales surpassed the $70 million mark, Tucson Sentinel reported. And April’s sales were upward to $81.2 million, making it the largest sales month in history for Arizona recreational cannabis.

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) reported that 9,273 lbs of medical marijuana were sold in January 2022, but that sales have decreased to just 5,600 lbs in July.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
