Cannabis America Laws

The majority of American adults support legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in their states, according to new polling data compiled by CBS News.

55% of those polled said they want to see cannabis legalization in their state, CBS News reported. Among those already residing in legal states, 60% said that they favor the policy change.

59% of people polled also favor expunging the criminal records of those with past cannabis convictions.

Few of those polled acknowledged being regular consumers of cannabis, and this decision appeared to be largely unaffected by the plant’s legal status.

The CBS poll is the latest in a series of recent national polls showing that most Americans believe that the possession and use of marijuana by adults should be legally permitted.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
