For the first time in history, the amount of Americans who use cannabis almost every day has surpassed the number who drink alcohol that frequently. This is a shift decades in the making as recreational marijuana use has become more mainstream and legal in many states.
An estimated 17.6 million people reported using cannabis daily or near-daily in 2022 compared to 14.7 million daily or near-daily alcohol drinkers, according to new data. In 1992, daily marijuana use hit a low point, with less than 1 million Americans claiming they used it almost every day.
“A good 40% of current cannabis users are using it daily or near daily, a pattern that is more associated with tobacco use than typical alcohol use,” said Jonathan Caulkins, a cannabis policy researcher at Carnegie Mellon University.
From 1992 to 2022, the per capita rate of reporting daily or near-daily cannabis use increased 15-fold. Caulkins noted that people may be more willing to report cannabis use as public acceptance continues to grow.
