A poll conducted by Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights claims that only 21% of Arizona Republican voters support recreational marijuana legalization. This contradicts a poll by OH Predictive Insights from February which found Arizona Republican support for marijuana legalization to be 48.2% and Democratic support to be 68.9%.

Mike Noble, Chief Pollster and Managing Partner at OH Predictive Insights, predicts that Arizona won’t legalize recreational marijuana this year, KTAR News reports. Efforts to legalize recreational marijuana fell short in 2016. The margin of defeat was minuscule with 51.3% of voters opposing legalization.

“Absolutely not in a midterm election, which is typically an older, more conservative, more consistent type of voter coming out for elections, so basically, recreational marijuana, you’re going to see come at us every four years,” Noble said. “Bet your buck that this will be tried again in 2020.”

Noble also noted that if “Trump-backers don’t get on board, the large core base of the Christian Conservatives will ensure that the Republican party will not be supporting legalization anytime soon.”

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
