According to a new report, state-legalized U.S. cannabis sales could reach $32 billion in 2024, which would be more than beef sales. It’d also equate to more sales than potato chips and the movie box office combined.

It is predicted that cannabis sales will surpass distilled spirits ($37.7 billion) within a couple years. Last month, researchers revealed data showing that for the first time in history, the amount of Americans who use cannabis almost every day has surpassed the number who drink alcohol that frequently.

“A good 40% of current cannabis users are using it daily or near daily, a pattern that is more associated with tobacco use than typical alcohol use,” said Jonathan Caulkins, a cannabis policy researcher at Carnegie Mellon University.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
