The University of Arizona is hosting a symposium focusing on the science of medical marijuana. The Inaugural Interdisciplinary Cannabis Symposium will be on September 25 from 8 am to 5 pm in the DuVal Auditorium at 1501 N. Campbell Ave. in Tucson. The event is free but requires pre-registration.

Researchers from around the world, including Israel and Canada, will gather in Tucson to discuss research, developments and science behind marijuana, according to Arizona Public Media. It’s said to be the first event of its kind in Arizona.

Professor Raphael Guener said, “I think people eventually here believed that if the University of Arizona wants to be a significant partner in all of this, something has to get started. They saw the proposal for the symposium, talking about it, as a very good beginning.”

Those interested in attending are encouraged to pre-register as soon as possible because U of A staff, students and faculty will be given priority entry.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
