Mexico

Mexico’s federal commissioner confirmed that marijuana-based products – such as infused foods, drinks, topicals, tinctures and pills – will be available for purchase in Mexico beginning in early 2018.

Medical marijuana was legalized in Mexico in June of 2017 but has kept its ban on cultivation and recreational marijuana, Reuters reports.

The country plans to formally publish its regulations for marijuana-based goods this week, which will allow such products to be imported for Mexico’s new market within a month or two.

Some medical marijuana companies may eventually produce products in Mexico with marijuana that is grown abroad.

Many South and Central American countries are reforming their marijuana laws. Mexico, along with Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Puerto Rico now have legalized medical marijuana markets, and in 2013, Uruguay became the first country legalize the commercial cultivation and distribution of marijuana.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
