Study Finds Marijuana Is “Associated with Increased Sexual Frequency”

Sex Cannabis

A population-based study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine indicates that marijuana use increases and enhances sex. The study included data from 28,176 women and 22,943 men.

Dr. Andrew J. Sun and Dr. Michael L. Eisenberg conducted the research study via questionnaire surveys, according to Forbes. Dr. Eisenberg is a male sexual and reproductive function expert and is asked frequently if marijuana plays a role in sexual function.

Of those participating in the study about 20% had more sex than non-marijuana users.

The study noted: “Marijuana use is independently associated with increased sexual frequency and does not appear to impair sexual function” and that “a positive association between marijuana use and sexual frequency is seen in men and women across all demographic groups.”

Dr. Eisenberg stressed that additional research regarding marijuana’s role in increased and enhanced sexual experience is important. It’s been said that marijuana use negatively impacts a male’s sexual and reproductive function, but this study points in the opposite direction.

Another study regarding female marijuana use before sex said 38 women indicated they’d used marijuana prior to having sex. A more pleasurable experience was had by 68% of them. This study polled 133 women at one OB/GYN clinic who were visiting for annual checkups. The data collected shows that 72% had increased erotic pleasure. When it came to the quality of female orgasms, 62% said they were enhanced – as were their overall libidos. The study also found that 16% purposely used marijuana prior to sex to decrease sex-related pain.

Research was then conducted on a larger group of 289 people. Of those, 65% reported an enhanced sexual experience. And just 3% said marijuana use took away from their sexual experience.

Dr. Monica Grover said, “Although some studies have shown results that are equivocal, anecdotally patients have reported positive feedback. Consumption of small amounts [of marijuana] prior to sex may increase libido in female patients, which in turn can release endorphins and increase vaginal lubrication.”
