Arizona Medical Marijuana Patient

The Arizona Department of Health Services’ (ADHS) April 2019 monthly medical marijuana program report reveals that Arizona has:

  • Medical marijuana patients: 197,025
  • Caregivers: 783
  • Dispensary agents: 5,875

In April 2019, Arizona dispensaries sold a total of 13,079.46 pounds of marijuana (209,271.35 ounces), an increase from 12,932.98 pounds sold in March 2019. Type of products sold in April 2019:

  • Marijuana flower: 11,829.80 pounds (189,276.72 ounces)
  • Marijuana edibles: 548 pounds
  • Other marijuana: 701 pounds

The age ranges of Arizona’s medical marijuana patients are:

  • Under 18: 188
  • 18 to 30: 47,826
  • 31 to 40: 41,281
  • 41 to 50: 31,228
  • 51 to 60: 31,318
  • 61 to 70: 32,083
  • 71 to 80: 11,033
  • 81 and older: 2,068

According to the data, the sexes of Arizona’s patients are:

  • 116,985 males (59.38%)
  • 80,040 females (40.62%)

Patients’ medical marijuana qualifying conditions:

  • Chronic Pain: 173,657 (88.14%)
  • Cancer: 4,094
  • PTSD: 2,402
  • Seizures: 1,207
  • Muscle Spasms: 911
  • Glaucoma: 1,113
  • Hepatitis C: 736
  • Nausea: 793
  • HIV/AIDS: 690
  • Crohn’s disease: 650
  • Cachexia: 122

  • Two or more conditions: 10,519

The counties with the most medical marijuana patients:

  • Maricopa County: 127,670
  • Pima County: 27,164
  • Pinal County: 11,844

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
