Tolleson Dispensary

Tonight, Dec 12, at 6 p.m. the Tolleson City Council is holding a public hearing regarding a potential new medical marijuana dispensary. The hearing will be held at the Tolleson City Hall Complex.

The proposed dispensary location is near McDowell and 85th Ave, an area that is predominantly commercial but does have an apartment complex nearby, according to AZ Family. The residents there have mixed feelings.

Resident Alicia Varela thinks that a dispensary may create a bad environment. She said, “I don’t think it’s good because that will attract bad people in this area.”

Sonya Brown isn’t real concerned, she said, “I don’t think that kids will be allowed to be over there or buying anything. They have it on lock pretty good.”

Persons wishing to voice their opinions about the proposed dispensary are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Arizona legalized marijuana for recreational use in November 2020. The law allows adults aged 21+ to purchase, possess and use cannabis. State-licensed cannabis dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana in early 2021. There are over 150 dispensaries in Arizona — a majority of them are in populous areas such as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff. Recreational cannabis delivery services began operating in 2024.
